Please help with the following situation: A patient had a hip dislocation and has history of prosthesis. Reduction was attempted, but was unsuccessful.

The op report reads: "We began with anterior traction with a little bit of external rotation to facilitate the head of the prosthesis to engage the prosthetic acetabulum, however after multiple attempts were unsuccessful and we were concerned that if we continued to try that she might suffer some type of fracture. Therefore, we stopped."

My question is should the attempted reduction be billed with a 53 modifier because the attempted reduction was not successful?

I would greatly appreciate any help.

Thanks,
Bev
