Our neurosurgeon performed a procedure on a patient . Four days post-op she was found to be very dehydrated and readmitted to the hospital by the surgeon. Would this be considered part of the surgery global period or would a separate charge be applicable with a -24 modifier? My physician says it's separate from the procedure but I think it's a complication of the procedure and should be considered part of the global package.

Thanks!

global

It depends, if the patient is Medicare, unless the patient is taken back to surgery, if it is within the global period it is not separately payable. For Commercial insurances that follow CPT guidelines it would be separately payable.
