Wiki Pre-Diabetes with Hypoglycemia

Patient has pre-diabetes, treated with metformin and presented to ER with an episode of hypoglycemia. Is this just coded as hypoglycemia, not related to diabetes along with the pre-diabetes code?

Unless the provider actual states that the patient is pre-diabetic you would code this visit as hypoglycemia only. In order to code pre-diabetes the physician would have to make that decision based on several indicators such a A1C, life style, obesity, etc.

In this case the provider has indicated pre-diabetes so the use of R73.03 along with hypoglycemia would be correct

If the physician documented the hypoglycemia as due to the use of Metformin and prediabetes, I believe you should code iatrogenic hypoglycemia (E16.0), adverse effect of insulin or antidiabetic drug (T38.3X5A), and prediabetes R73.03. Cindy
