Hello, I have a question regarding the Pre op anesthesia evaluation. If it is for a highly complex morbidity, and medical decision making was done, would it be separately billed as an E/M code or would it still be included in the global package? Also, if it was rendered about a week before the surgical procedure, would it still be included in the global package?

Hi there. For your first question: That work is part of preparing the patient for anesthesia and is always included (with a narrow exception for when anesthesia is cancelled under certain circumstances).

For more information about the timing and coding, here is an article from the ASA. https://www.asahq.org/quality-and-practice-management/managing-your-practice/timely-topics-in-payment-and-practice-management/distinguishing-between-a-pre-anesthesia-evaluation-and-a-separately-reportable-evaluation-and-management-service#:~:text=Compensation%20for%20the%20pre%2Danesthesia%20evaluation%20Compensation%20for,described%20in%20the%20ASA%20Relative%20Value%20Guide%C2%AE.
