Hello, I am having some trouble coding pre-op visits that are for diagnostic studies. It is my understanding that Z01.818 is first listed followed by the reason for surgery. What code would follow Z01.818 if the reason for surgery is an MRI with sedation? or coloscopy? Any input would be appreciated.

You'll need to look at the patient's record to identify the reason that the physician has ordered the MRI, or the reason why the colonoscopy is being performed. Assign the ICD-10 code from that information and use that as the second diagnosis after Z01.818.
