The issue of car seat testing of premature/small infants has come up in our pediatric office. In the past, the hospitals have been doing repeat car seat testing on those babies that failed the initial testing. Now with the flu, hospitals don't want well babies returning for the second testing. We have a baby who cannot get repeat testing done for this reason and a request to do the testing here at our facility. The testing involves having the parents bringing the car seat and base. The baby is put in the car seat and a pulse ox is attached. If the baby can maintain sats above 90% for 1 hour, they pass.
Does anyone have any suggestions on if this can be billed and if so what ICD-9 and CPT codes to use? The testing would require the use of an exam room for the entire hour.
