I feel like an idiot here, I have been billing presurgical exams with dx code Z01.818, for what seems like forever. NOW they are being rejected for diagnosis. every place I look states that it is a billable code, but not a primary diagnosis. So I guess I need some help to figure what I am supposed to use as a primary, when the only reason they come in, is for there exam prior to a screening colonoscopy. I would appreciate any help I can get. Thank you in advance.

See the following link. I hope this helps a little. It looks like you need to be coding the reason for the procedure along with the Z-code. The other link it a previous thread discussing this very thing
