One of my providers performs proctectomies on a regular basis. He almost always performs a mobilization of the splenic flexure when this occurs in order to create a tension-free anastomosis. We can only bill the mobilization code (44213 or 44139) with the partial colectomy codes and not the proctectomy codes. Could we bill the proctectomy codes with the modifier 22? If not are there any other suggestions?
