What is the general consensus regarding billing for a the administration of a "brown bagged" drug? For example, when a patient has their medication sent to the practice via a Specialty Pharmacy(i.e, Shingles vac, Gardasil, Prolia, etc), our practice will administer the medication and bill the payer for the ADMIN code only. I recently heard that the "brown bagged" drug should be billed to the payers with a $0.01 charge so the insurance company does not question why an admin charge was billed without a drug..this is new to me and seems unnecessary.
Any thoughts?
