Does anyone have any experience with billing psychological assessments for patients preparing to have bariatric surgery? I've found some good information about what the assessment should include and how it should be documented but nothing about what types of practitioners can bill it or what code it should be billed with. I'm thinking 96150 is the most appropriate. Does anyone know for sure?

I work for the military and we use the 96150 as well. We have both Social Workers and Psychologists using this code for these specific patients.

Unless the patient has a psych diagnosis then there would not be one you can use. You can use the Z code for pre op with the diagnosis for the surgery. You cannot use a code for a diagnosis the patient does not already have.
