First I recommend that you review the NY laws that pertain to the "scope of service" allowed for NP's or CNS's in your state. Once you have determine what their scope of service is then you can ask: What is their specialty? Do they have script authority? Are they in private practice, group practice or FQHC? NP's with script authority and psychiatry specialty. In our Center for Mental Health CNS's routinely see initial intakes and follow up for medication refills. Our midlevels routinely provide the psychotherapy billed under Diagnosing MD's. Hope this helps.
