When the diagnosis documented are bipolar disorder and depression, do we need to code them separatley (296.80, 311) or bipolar disorder alone (296.80) will do. Because code description of 296.80 states - Manic depressive: reaction NOS, syndrome NOS.
As per my understanding, depression is the integral part of bipolar disorder so no need to code them separately.
What are your suggestions? Any link regarding this will really help me in a lot way.

Bipolar Depression

I would not code 296.xx and 311 together. In the tabular list, code 296.2x is used for manic-depressive psychosis or reaction, depressed type. If the physician has documented Bipolar I disorder, code 296.5x is used or Bipolar I disorder, most recent episode depressed.
