Question on referral end dates

I have a question for all of you. Hopefully this will settle an argument in my office. I have a claim that was an infusion only. The date of service was in the middle of the authorization for those specific services. Her HMO referral expired the same date as the date of service. BCBS denied. When I called, they told me that the referrals expire at midnight the day before the expiration date documented on the referral. Has anyone else been told the same thing?
