Just got off the phone with our supplier for rapid flu tests a&B. One test tests for both A and then B. THey told me that I should code the rapid tests:
87804 for A and then 87804 - 59 for B. Since it is the same test strip for both can you really bill for two different tests???

You are actually performing two different tests looking for two different results, so you code 87804, 87804-59.

I agree. Even though it's one test kit, it provides two, separate results. Our carriers also require modifier 59 on the second test.

It's not double dipping...To reassure you, there is a CPT Assistant article that completely validates this. CPT Assistant May 2009.
