Can anyone help me with coding re-do craniotomies? My physician did a re-do crani and a tumor resection opening through the previous craniotomy incision. I just want to know in general how to code for it. :confused:

There is no specific code for a second craniotomy done at the same site, so you would use the appropriate CPT code and append modifier 78 if it is done during the global period of the first surgery by the same surgeon.

I would use the same crani code, but you may want to look at modifier 76 to see if this may more accurately reflect the circumstances.
