We are hiring an RD (registered dietitian) and she will be housed in our Endocrinology practice with one physician and an APC. Can the Endocrinologist in the office refer to his RD and for certain payers, also be the billing provider? usually the referring would be whoever referred the patient to Endo, because they share the same office. The only problem with this is that an RD cannot self-diagnosis so whatever is on the referral is what the RD would have to use. The only diagnosis a RD can add is BMI and Dietary counseling and surveillance. Help, thoughts?

I would think the RD cannot be incident-to an MD, because an MD does not have the same training as an RD, and those services are not incidental to the MD.
