We have been sending authorizations to release records to our local hospital. Of course the patient has signed and we have indicated what records we need. The hospital is sending the releases back to us stating "if this is for continuing care, please make a notation on the release form and resend request". I do not understand why the hospital is wanting to know if it is for continuation of care????? Is this a new HIPPAA thing? Thanks in advance for any insight :)

Yes and no. It could be because the hospital may require this with internal policies, and it may be HIPAA related because if the patient requested an accounting of disclosures (meaning all the times the hospital shared his or her PHI), any releases that are done for the purposes of treatment, payment or operations do not need to be included. That is still under consideration to be changed, but as of now, they don't have to be included. Therefore, by requesting you to notate that on your written request, the hospital knows that the release of the patient's information to your practice will not be included in an accounting of disclosures should the patient request one.
