Does any one know where I would find info on how many days the patient must be out of the hosp before we could code another H&P.

Example: We see the pt for an infection send the pt home on IV ABX and the pt returns 48 hrs later. Our doctors get called in to manage the pts ABX again for the same infection.

I was told the pt should be out of the hosp for at least three days before billing an H&P/consult codes. I was told in this case to just bill a subs visit. I have a doctor that is asking for this in writing and I have not been able to find any thing.

Please help.

Thanks

Your doctor is right

The patient only has to be home 1 calendar day to be re-admitted. If the patient is discharged at 6:00 p.m. and is readmitted after midnight, your physician can perform and bill for another H&P. You only find restrictions in writing, rarely permissions. And always be wary of what you are told. Good luck and happy coding.
