Hello, looking for some guidance on revenue codes. Are coders responsible for knowing what they are and how to use them or are billers? As the biller fills out the UB04 form.

Typically, revenue codes are not manually assigned by coders or billers. These codes are pre-associated with specific service items in the facility’s chargemaster, so they automatically populate onto the UB-04 claim form when the service is billed.

That said, there may be system edits or flags in place that could prompt the biller to review revenue codes before a claim is released, especially if a particular payer has unique requirements for certain services.

Overall, revenue codes should already be built into the system and tied to each charge item so they drop onto the claim automatically.

Even though coders and billers usually don't assign these codes directly, it's still helpful to have a general understanding of them. The good news is that revenue codes are standardized and fairly straightforward.

A quick reference or cheat sheet can be a useful tool - Noridian offers a good one on its website. (Even if Noridian isn’t your MAC, the list is still broadly applicable for most UB-04 submissions.)
