Is there anyone (from Texas, if possible) who is experienced with billing RN as First Surgical Assistant? This is a new venture and I would GREATLY appreciate some coding/billing tips. Please contact me at (423) 892-5362, and thanks very much in advance!

RN as First Assist

In Texas the RN as to be certified as a CRNFA in order to bill. In my past ortho practice we billed under the physician's provider number with an AS modifier. if the nurse has his/her own provider number, you would use modifier 80. The usual pay is around 20% of the allowed for the procedure.
Be very sure your physician includes the first assist in the op note

Does anyone know what to do when billing for a CRNFA who assists on a surgery for a Medicare patient? Since Medicare does not recognize this provider type, are we allowed to bill the patient?
