The provider participates in the design, construction, and selection of simple treatment devices such as a simple block or simple bolus. Providers use these devices for proper dose delivery to the tumor and protection of nearby healthy tissues.
Clinical Responsibility
The provider selects, designs, and or constructs simple specialized devices such as simple blocks and simple boluses to minimize the amount of radiation that is delivered to normal tissue while maximizing the radiation dose to the tumor site. Blocks are treatment devices made up of the alloy Cerrobend®, which has a special radiation–absorbing property. A bolus is additional material, such as a flat piece of rubberlike material, used when treating uneven areas of a patient, such as a nose. Providers use the bolus to make up for missing tissue or to provide a buildup of dosage to the skin surface. Simple devices may be prefabricated.
