I'm new at this and need some guidance - If you have a patient come into the hospital complaining of chest pains and after checking the patient out & running some tests you determine the patient is having a panic attack and begin treating them for the panic attack, would the primary dx be Panic attack or would you use chest pains?

Usually if a definitive diagnosis is made, then you would use that as the primary dx rather than the symptoms that caused the patient to present to you in the first place. In your specific case, I would use both... 300.01+786.50
