If someone could help me with finding documentation and the correct use of the following codes I would so appreciate it: when is it appropriate to use 995.91 verses the 038 codes; and if it is from a UTI do you use the 038 code or 599.0?? Thanks!
 
Sepsis is a systemic infection, septicemica is the underlying organism, and the UTI is the localized infection so you would code it as
038.9
995.91
599.0

995.91 is secondary only allowed and requires the underlying organism be coded first.
