Case scenario: Patient being seen today in the clinic for recheck of knee pain. Was originally seen in the ER over the weekend by the same physician as the patient slipped on the ice and hurt his knee. Today he is having his knee aspirated. Diagnosis was knee pain. Can we code this as first diagnosis Knee injury 959.7, then knee pain 719.46 then the E codes. Insurance generally recognizes only the first dx code and since this was an accident if we do not use 800-900 codes it would not be recognized considered as such. Many insurance companies pay 100% on injuries. How would you code this? Please advise. Thanks
