Can a specialist request consult to another specialist in hospital setting? An Orthopedic Surgery Specialist requested a hospital consult for a patient in regards to Endocrinology (Diabetes) issue. It is not the Attending provider. Can I bill Consult code for this encounter or Inpatient E/M code?
 
You can bill a consultation code when the three "R"s of a consultation are met, and the patient's insurance is still accepting consultation codes. Medicare and now most private insurance don't any more.
