Our physician has performed a sphenopalatine ganglion nerve block using a
q-tip to anesthetize the nasal passageway and a sheath with a pigtail catheter and a syringe to apply pressurized delivery of lidocaine to the sympathetic fibers.

The description of sphenoplatine ganglion nerve block in CPT is "injection" anesthetic agent. Is the above method of delivery considered an injection? Some of the clinical staff consider "injection" through a catheter as an "injection" and feel that 64505 is the proper code.

I am a coder and do not look at it the same way they do. I consider an injection as being done with a "needle".

I have researched this procedure and one response was that from a coding perspective the AMA directs us to use CPT 64999.

Is injection of material through a catheter considered an "injection" or is this CPT code only used when a needle is used to deliver the material?

Does anyone know what CPT specifically means by "injection" in this context?

Thanks for your help!
