Does anyone know when a spinal tap is performed and for example the physician attempts the procedure 3 times and only one is successful, are you able to bill the two unsuccessful attempts as a reduced service? Also, can you tell me where to find the answer in print.

For public-relation issues, our in house policy is to code it once for the successful procedure.

Supercoder.com suggests appending modifier -22 for a particularly difficult LP with supporting documentation of multiple sticks, time, unusual anatomy and/or difficulty.
