Patient came in for Pre-op for ACL repair. Patient previous had a Status post Failed ACL. and is going to have ACL sx again. Previously had sx 6months,. Can I and should I code the status post failed ACL sx and if So which codes would appropiate.

I am assuming that the ACL is torn which is why the patient is visiting so I would use that as the ICD-9 since it is the reason for the pre-op visit. Guidelines state that you code for the current condition or disease and while the failed ACL repair is a portion of the reason it is ultimately not the reason for the surgery.
