When a patient comes in to discuss getting a tubal or a vasectomy, would the E&M codes (99201-99205, 99212-99215) be billed or would it be more appropriate to use the preventive counseling codes (99401-99404)? The surgery will normally be booked at the end of the visit.
Thanks,
Sue

Hi, Sue. I work for a large group of urologists and see a lot of patients that come in wanting a vasectomy. We use the first set of codes you mention, not the preventitve counseling codes.
