I do chart audits and want to know if there are any rules or policies about keeping the results and back up material. How long must these be kept? Do they have to be in paper format or can they be scanned into a folder?

Audit Retention

HIPAA requires that covered entities retain their HIPAA-related audit reports for a minimum of six years. It can be electronic or on paper. At our facility I have the results stored electronically in my folder on the network as well as printed out (just in case).
