Hello All,

Just curious what your thoughts are for a patient who is diagnosed with a sprain or strain and given a splint. I am getting different information so I wanted to get some feedback. This is for Emergency Room Visits.

Some say we ONLY charge a splint if the patient is diagnosed with a fracture with no reduction/manipulation intervention. If they were reduced then it is included (which I know). Never charge the splint for strain/strain as it is included in the E&M.

While others are saying if they are diagnosed with a strain or sprain we can charge for the splint as long as it is not Velcro and not to charge a splint for fractures.

Any insight would be appreciated. I know not all facilities code the same but just wanted to get your opinion. Thank you in advance.
