I recently noticed that there are codes for subsequent observation visits. How are those codes used? I thought the rule for observation was 1 day. Please help.
 
Subsequent observation day services 99224-99226 are billed for the second day when the patient is not discharged or admitted to inpatient care. Per Highmark Medicare Services, these codes are used by the provider who initiated/ordered observation services. Other providers use the appropriate office/outpatient codes, 99201-99215.
