My doctor did a surgery that started at 11:00pm and ended the next day at 2:00 am what would the date of the surgery be the date he started or the date he finished

I vaguely remember reading that you should use the start date of a surgery if it every goes into the next day, but I cannot for the life of me remember where I saw that. I will try to find it and post here if possible.
