It is my understanding that tendinopathy is an umbrella term that encompasses conditions that cause pain, inflammation and dysfunction of a tendon; this can include conditions such as tendinitis, tenosynovitis, and tendinosis.

However, I am coming across our physicians seemingly using tendinopathy and more specific tendon conditions interchangeably.

For example:
Documentation notes: Right medial common flexor tendinopathy
ICD-10 assigned: M77.01 Medial epicondylitis, right elbow

Documentation notes: Left non-insertional Achilles tendinopathy
ICD-10 assigned: M76.62 Achilles tendinitis, left leg

In both these cases I would have instead assigned a code from category M67.90 due to non-specificity.

Would appreciate any second opinions or feedback as I’m coming across multiple sources online using these terms interchangeably while others differentiate them.
