Many blocks of codes (J00-J99, I10-I15, etc) have the "Use additional code to identify tobacco exposure" documentation. If pt denies using tobacco and second hand exposure to tobacco, should a code also be added to encounter? I have been given the suggestion of Z78.9 - Other specified health status. The description doesn't really address the non tobacco exposure however have not located a more specific code. How are you addressing this issue? Thank you for your input.

"Use additional code" only if there is a tobacco code that applies.
If there patient doesn't smoke, isn't exposed to smoke and is not a former smoker there is no need to add an additional code. The J code is sufficient.
