DOES ANYONE KNOW IF A POTASSIUM HYDROXIDE FOR A TOENAIL , HAS ANY RELATIONS TO DECALFACTION AND SHOULD BE IT CODED AS 88311?

THANK YOU

Hello Lucy071789;
I have your answer today. We had a virtual interactive presentation with my favorite pathologist's today and I asked your very question because I was personally not acclimated to this procedure.
This is what I was told today. No, you may not code the decal 88311.
Please let me explain why.
KOH prep (again not a decal) is a less expensive method performed in "microbiology".
They place it on the keratin to dissolve the protein to see the fungus.
Whereas a true decal acid decalcifier is used to warrant the 88311 charge such as in surgical pathology.
I'm hopeful that explanation clears the confusion.
Please be so kind to respond if you have additional questions okay.
Have a wonderful evening,
Dana
