I am unsure how to code this senario: a patient is in my office for an outpatient procedure. Partway through the procedure, it becomes obvious the patient must be transported to a hospital for further care. The porcedure is stopped, an ambulance is called, and the patient is taken to the nearest hospital for continuence of care. I am pretty certain I use a modifier 53 attached to the procedure code to indicate a discontinued service, but what about the extended care that was given while the patient was here? There was quite a bit of critical necessary before the ambulance came. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.
