Many ER trauma patients are transfers from other smaller facilities and arrive with MRI/CT films for which no interpretation/report has been completed at the time of transfer. The ER or hospitalist then request the on duty radiologist to interpret and do the written report. I have no idea if the other smaller facilities eventually send the scans to be read by another radiologist. My question is what can our radiologist bill? It truly is a consult request and CPT 76140 seems appropriate. This scenario happens quite often at our facility but insurance carriers do not accept (Medicare) nor pay for CPT 76140. Suggestions???
