We have mental health providers who will start an initial psych assessment and want to continue it another day. they want to claim the 90801 twice. we have been telling them it's the same visit and it cannot be counted twice. I just had an encounter where the provder coded a 90801 on the first visit and stated will continue intial assessment at next visit. then coded a 90806 for the second one. Is there anything about a two part initial assessment?

I don't think there is anything is particular about this. But in the guidelines it tells you everything that needs to be documented in order to claim the 90801. Why don't they just use a time based therapy code for the first visit then once the intake is completed they can use the 90801? We have providers that will do that if the initial intake was not completed at the first visit.

when you say "Why don't they just use a time based therapy code for the first visit" - are you referencing 90804,90806 or 90808?
