When 2 physicians see a patient in the ER, can you use an ER CPT E/M code for each physician or would you use 1 ER E/M code for the ordering physician and then an outpatient/office visit CPT E/M code for the other physician? This would be for a critical access hospital.

Who is the second physician? Two ED providers should not both bill an ED E/M on the same date of service if it is the same episode of care. I.E. the patient didn't leave and then come back. If the second physician is a specialist, does the documentation support a consultation E/M? If not, yes they can have an ED E/M billed.
