What does your facility do in the cases where a patient has two Medicare supplemental policies in effect at the same time and BOTH pay thus resulting in a credit? To whom do you send the credit? Since both supplemental plans were in effect neither will take their money back. How does this happen you may ask? The patient had 1 supplement registered with Medicare so Medicare automatically crossed the claim over to them. The patient gave us a DIFFERENT supplement, not mentioning the other, so in this electronic world we live in as soon as the payment posted from Medicare our system automatically sent a claim on to the supplement that we had in our system.

We advise the patient to update their COB with all plans then we reach out to one of the secondary plans, notify them of what happened and ask them to investigate and advise or recoup if they confirm an overpayment.
