I code for a plastic surgeon who often treats lower extremity and sacral area ulcers. He almost always refers to these ulcers as "non-healing wounds" or "defects". I am confused as how I should be coding these. He believes that once they have been debrided I should no longer be coding them as ulcers. I am not finding much information on this. If there is ever a time that an ulcer should be coded as a non healing surgical, how do I know and where is there documentation of this?
