I code for facility ER, and at our facility it is a policy that if something is found in a urynalysis (I can't remember exactly what) a culture is automatically performed sometimes without an order. Most of the time the culture will grow a bacteria. Since the culture is not interpretted by a physician I can't code the bacteria . . . right? My question is, when a culture is performed in this scenerio and it is not medically necessary do you send it back to the Dr? If that's the case, there are a lot of cultures that have to be sent back. Does any else have this problem?
