Hello,

The community mental health center I am working at currently performs urinalysis to determine if any of 13 drugs are present. We have not billed for this previously but want to start and I just want to verify some information.

We are prepared to start using CPT 80305.QW with CLIA on file. Is that the most appropriate code for this purpose? Also, what level of experience of licensure can perform this service? We have medical assistants, licensed practicing nurses, and registered nurses that could potentially perform.

Any information would be helpful as I haven't found anything via google.

Thanks,
Lisa

Hi Lisa,

We are a PCP/Internal Medicine office and we perform this test often for our patients who are on opioids for chronic pain. We use CPT 80305 and have no problem with reimbursement. I can't speak to who can perform the service because we have patients do the urine sample during their office visit, so it gets billed along with the E/M code. Wish I could offer more help.
