Good Morning,
I am new to blood bank/transfusion services. Is 86077 done as a screening for all patients that currently need a blood transfusion, or that may need one in the future? The billing slips I am given are pretty vaque in terms of the reason the test is being ordered. (For example "normal delivery", Hypothyroidism" "head injury"!!) Before I send these back, I would like a bit more info regarding why this panel would be done. So I can better explain my concerns. (Most websites are blocked at my work computer - which limits my investigation).

Any help and or guidance is appreciated.

Thank you
-Kathleen

According to the 2013 Coder's Desk Reference, this physician service is an assessment of the crossmatch blood work and/or evaluation of irregular antibody prior to transfusion. A physician review may be called for when anamolies arise in the antibody evaluation. An interpretation and written report are specifically required in the code description.
