I work for an Ortho PA-C and he often assists on surgeries with visiting MD's. He almost always does the post-op care of these patients {99%}, as well as assists. What is the best way for me to code the procedure so that he gets the correct payment? {The visiting MD bills with modifier 54}. Thanks!
 
I am not exactly clear with what the situation is here. Is the PA assisting with the surgery in addition to performing all of the postop care for the patient?

Bill the surgical procedure with just the AS only for the PA. Even if the surgeon only bills with the mod-54. Fracturing charges using modifier 54 and 55 for a provider for the same payer would not be appropriate and might bring unwanted attention to the practice for "exploding" charges.
