Wiki Vcodes and reimbursment

How does using Vcodes affect reimbursments? I was told by my claims department not to use them or HCPCS codes as they don't add revenue. I code for nurse practitioners in the Skilled Nursing Facility.

think of the claim as a cliff notes. Tell the story regarding what was documented, summarize it in otherwords with your codes. V codes are allowable and sometimes necessary to complete the story from a severity of illness perspective. Some V codes are first listed only allowable live the patient that is in the nursing facility for convalesence only, that V code is first-listed only, or the patient that is in for rehab, that Vcode category is first only. also there are some V codes that are secondary only allowed such as pallative care. You use the codes that match the documentation of the reason for the encounter
