Does anyone know of a good general definition of a "Wellness Visit"? I get a lot of patients who are irritated/upset/confused when I tell them that I cannot bill their o.v. as a yearly px when they came in for hypertension, dog bite, poison ivy, sinus inf, etc. How do you handle these situations?

There is a lot of information on the CMS site, and you may want to check your local carrier. The annual wellness visit has been defined by CMS as a risk assessment based on the documentation guidelines that have been published. Medicare also publishes a guide for seniors that they send out to them that explains what the Annual Wellnes visit entails. It is not a head-to-to physical exam, but more of an assessment of patient's risk for chronic disease.
