If a patient goes to ED On monday afternoon with chest pain, and doctor does a consult and says OK to discharge directly from ED, can the doctor use CPT 99222 (initial hospital care) or is there another series of codes that is used?

If the patient who presented on Monday is is admitted to observation for rule out myocardial infarction, gets a stress test on Tuesday, and is d/c on Tuesday...can the consult that was done on Monday be a 99222 and followup note on Tuesday be 99232?

Review the CPT section on observation care. If your patient was seen in the ED, then 99281-99285 would apply. If the patient was admitted to observation, review 99234-99236. Inpatient codes would not apply.
