Hey i totally can relate to you. I am in the same boat . I think i not fair that no one wants to give a chance to new coders. i don't know what else to do. Good luck to you.

It definitely is a struggle to find a job as a new coder, but most of the time you need to apply for a medical receptionist position or medical records just something to get your foot in the door and climb your way up. I was lucky enough to have a coding job right after I took my exam and I have been here for more than 4 years, but I can also tell you that it is hard to get a job somewhere else even with 4+ years of experience and I also have CPC, CPB, CIC. Makes me wonder what is the point to gain other certificates that I am not able to use.

I was where you were at one point. It took me 4 years before I got the job at the judge group. Now, I'm with a different company. The Judge Group really helped me get on my feet 2 years ago. Maybe try them? I didn't likeit there necessarily because there was no PTO and you had work over to take time off. It was a good starter job though. Don't give up!

@ ranee, aniaw82@live.com,

I totally hear you—and you're definitely not alone. So many new coders with CPC-A are in the same boat: trained, certified, and eager to work, but stuck in that frustrating loop where every job seems to require “experience.” I have been working with a community college in the area for internship opportunities for Medical Biller/Coder programs, when one of the ladies I know personally reached out to me with the same challenge like you are having. I hired her, trained her and mentored her all the way. The struggle is real.

👋 I wanted to share an opportunity that might help bridge that exact gap, thanks to that coder who's still with me. I am looking to gather a small group, train and hopefully keep!

I posted details here: https://www.aapc.com/discuss/thread...-to-cpc-a-removal-and-career-growth-🌟.205055/

Wishing you success on your coding journey! There are people looking to invest in motivated new coders. You've just found one. 👊

Warm regards,
Julia Nabiullina, MBA, MS, CPC, CPMA, CPCO, CRC

You’re not necessarily doing anything “wrong. “ it’s difficult to find a job no matter what the industry. Just like anything else, it takes persistence and patience.
A Few Tips:

1. Don’t look just specifically for coding jobs. Apply for any hospital clerical or medical records position. I got my start by working as a HIM clerk. I handled ROI requests, analyzed records, and did anything else that needed to be done. When a coding position became available, they give me the opportunity

2. Follow up withevery position you apply for. Once you apply, connect with the companies via email to reiterate your interest in working for them. You may not get a response, but HR will see it and it will set you apart from the other candidates.

3. Don’t get down on yourself. Looking for a job is one of the biggest stressors for anyone. It’s natural to feel what you’re feeling. We’ve all been there. It’s frustrating, but when you find that right position it really will all be worth it.

I'm not sure you're doing anything 'wrong', but I'm wondering what your resume looks like and if it's providing an accurate overview of your skills and abilities. Besides the comments above, where respondents have suggested looking into other revenue cycle roles instead of just coding, if you're not getting many opportunities to interview, you may want to have someone look at your resume. As a hiring manager, I see dozens of resumes submitted by new coders, and not all of them would interest me enough to go further. If you want, send me your resume and I'll take a look, if only to make any suggestions that might help you. Pamela.Warren@mainehealth.org
